Eastern Screen Printers was set up in 1986 as a Prokritee project attached to Action Bag Handicrafts in Saidpur, Bangladesh.
As a project it became financially independent from Prokritee in 1991 and registered as a not for profit, social welfare organisation. It employs around 35 people almost all women in production or processing of screen printed greetings cards and exports around 80% of its products to Alternative Trading Organisations (ATO) in Europe and America.
Support is given to workers in the form of a provident fund and help with medical expenses. They also provide literacy classes and health and safety training as well as classes on family planning, mother and child health and nutrition.
Workers are also able to send their children to school and often onto higher education.
