Sreepur Village was founded in 1989 by former British Airways stewardess Pat Kerr. While on stopovers in Dhaka, Pat worked as a volunteer in a children’s home. When she learnt that the home was under threat of closure she appealed to her colleagues in B.A. to raise enough money to build a new children’s village.
The children’s home also provides the site for a paper and card making facility which provides cards, envelopes and wheatstraw to be made into beautiful handcrafted cards.
The women make the cards at home, for which they are paid a fair wage without having to leave their children. With the help of British Airways the charity is able to bring the cards back to the UK and return every penny from sales to Sreepur Village.
In recent years the quality of paper being produced reached a very high standard and it was decided that greeting cards could be made to raise funds for the Village. The cards are decorated with a combination of wheat straw and paper. The finished product is totally made from locally sourced natural products.
