Swajan Crafts began in Dhaka in 1999 as a private company with 5 partners.
It provides high quality handicrafts for export and works with handicraft producing groups around Bangladesh mainly in rural and semi-rural areas of the country. Working with textiles and paper products Swajan networks out to a large number of producers, for example over 400 working on embroidery work. Almost all the people working on paper products are women and their pay from Swajan is often their primary source of income.
With some groups various health programmes and other benefits are provided. Paper Dove has worked with Swajan for a number of years developing beautiful and original hand embroidered greetings cards and stationery.
